Favorite Portuguese Wines Under 10 Euros
These are two of my favorite Portuguese wines under 10 euros. Know more about Bons Ares, from Douro Valley and Monte da Peceguina, from Alentejo.
Bons Ares by Ramos Pinto
Bons Ares Red (2014)
This is the Douro in a bottle. Presents itself with a dense, dark but clean ruby color. Intense aroma of red fruits, strawberry jam, dark chocolate, and spices. In the mouth, it is solid and consistent. Notes of blackberries and a spicy touch. 40% of the wine was matured in French oak barrels. Great potential for aging. Grapes varieties: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
In the aroma prevails a more elegant than potent profile, despite the perfectly matured fruit, such as floral and fresh balsamic sensations. Balanced and integrated barrel bottom. In the mouth, it shows good structure, quality fruit, freshness, proportion, velvety but firm tannins, perfumed end, roasted traces of mineral character.”
Bons Ares Red (2015) tasting notes by Nuno Guedes Vaz Pires – Revista de Vinhos, issue 365
Quinta dos Bons Ares property
The wine originates from Quinta dos Bons Ares located in the Douro region, sub-region of the Douro Superior, in the parish of Touça. It’s high altitude, 600 metres (2000 feet), makes the climate milder in the Summer and therefore more appropriate for the storing and settling of the wines. The granitic soil contributes to the production of more acidic and fresher grapes.
Ramos Pinto
Founded by Adriano Ramos Pinto in 1880, became notorious for its quality Port wines associated with innovative distribution and communication strategies. Casa Ramos Pinto owns a number of estates throughout the Douro valley. This house is best known by Lágrima, the sweetest of all Port wines, and by Duas Quintas a reference in Douro table wines.
Monte da Peceguina by Herdade da Malhadinha Nova
Monte da Peceguina Red (2016)
Modern Alentejo in a bottle. Shows a bright red color with purple hints. On the nose fresh red fruits and floral notes stand out on a spicy and toasty background. The palate shows good structure and ripe tannins. Fine balance between fruit and oak. The result is a fresh and complex wine with good ageing potential.
Herdade da Malhadinha property
The perfect weather conditions of the Alentejo, the schist-based soils, the well-drained slopes of the property as well as the carefully selected grape variety (castes) make up the Terroir of Malhadinha Nova with unique conditions for producing wines with unique character and great quality.
Herdade da Malhadinha
Malhadinha Nova is a typical Alentejo family estate situated in Albernoa. Since 1998, the family’s passion and commitment have transformed a long-abandoned land into fields that give life to genuine, high-quality Alentejo produce. Beyond great wines and olive oils, this Herdade has also become a reference on Alentejo hospitality.
